Ash Borer Moth

Podosesia syringae

Description:

General appearance is that of a wasp with multi-colored legs.

Habitat:

State park in SW Pennsylvania

Notes:

There is an Ash Borer Beetle that does serious damage to trees but I have seen nothing (despite its name) to indicate that this moth does likewise.

Yes, it is amazing how good some insects are at imitation. I guess the classic example is the Viceroy/Monarch pair but the one you mentioned is really outstanding.

Amazing! I believe the moth may not be the problem as much as the caterpillar...very cool moth, almost mistook it for a wasp!
