Asian Openbill Stork

Anastomus oscitans

Description:

Big bird, largely white except the black wings (it looked bottle green to me from a height). There is a distinct gap when the beak is closed. This helps it to eat snails.

Habitat:

This one was foraging just off a highway in Gujarat...the land sloped a bit and there was a thin trickle of water and lots of muddy soil. The larger of the two was frightened by my presence but this one let me take 3-4 snaps in the fading dusk.
