melon fruit fly

Tephritidae Bactrocera cucurbitae

Description:

A wasp mimick fly with distinctive markings. The ovipositor gives the fly away as a tephritidae, an easy search after that.

Habitat:

Adjacent to a small stream. Altitude 1000m.

Notes:

Originating in India, this fly has caused devastation globally, wherever melons and gourds are harvested. A truly nasty bug that needs eradication, or maybe we should stop eating its food source, after all, the fly was here long before we were!
