Hornet

Vespa crabro

Description:

This member of Vespidae family has black and brown thorax, with yellow abdomen stripped and spotted black. Brown legs and antennae, and brownish transparent wings. Yellow front, and eyes "C" shaped.

Habitat:

Seen crawling under the rotten bark (feeding I guess) in one of the trees on a footpath on edges of our beautiful Bagasse forest (deciduous, predominantly oak, forest - photo 5) on France-Switzerland border, in a valley of lake Geneva, subalpine, just in between Jura and Alps mountains ranges.

Notes:

Rather large insect, ... and scary! You should have seen the panic around when someone came around and asked what was I photographing... "Oh, nothing much, an insect... Hornet... ". I heard one or two cries, and out of blue, I stood alone...
