Ochlodes sylvanoides
Meyer Ranch Park, a meadow area
Thanks Shalryn for the ID help. Do you think Woodland Skipper (Ochlodes sylvanoides) might be a good match?
I found some of these the other day. I was wondering what they might be as well. From online photo's I would say Large Skipper is a good guess.
If I had to guess, I would say that this butterfly or its ancestors escaped from someone's living collection or was shipped over in a packing crate or with some sort of natural cargo. The large skipper tends to live in Europe and Asia, as far as Japan. It feeds on grasses, so it likes meadows.
