Asian Barred Owlet

Glaucidium cuculoides

Description:

Brown and buff barring on back and most of front, yellow eyes, black and white barred tail. Overall length about 22 cm.

Habitat:

Temperate forest between the moat at Angkor Wat and the temple area. See photo #3. Resident in Cambodia and other parts of SE Asia.

Notes:

Birds of SE Asia by Robson says that daytime roosts are often open but this one was pretty hard to find even though it was calling! Lifer!

Thanks Maria! It was during a wonderful day I spent with Sophoan who is a guide working for the Sam Veasna Nature Center out of Siem Reap. If anyone ever wants a perfect guide for Cambodia, ask for her. Not far from this Asian Barred Owlet we heard a Brown Hawk Owl - Ninox scutulata -calling. I managed to get a good look at it for just seconds and so no photo to share.
