Spotting

Description:

I couldn't figure out what these were, or who made them. Each cone had a pebble on top, just a small area of them beside a well.

Habitat:

Seen in a muddy field in lowland wet forest near the Costa Rica River in Guapiles.

How interesting Pam - it reminds me of cypress "knees"! It does sound like the general consensus here is that this is caused by erosion & not any kind of living organism, & therefore it doesn't really belong on Project Noah, so please can you remove the spotting.

Very very interesting, Pamsai I have seen same thing after rain in Kerala. :))

thanks Sckel, it does look like a fantasy village.

But, yes, it's erosion :) I've noticed similar "buildings" just with different material -> http://www.flickr.com/photos/94700363@N0...
:)

It's beautiful. As a small village.

Yes Chun and Sarah, that's what I thought also when I first saw them, but I didn't investigate so closely, and besides they look great!... Oh well! Probably doesn't fit into PN though!

I used to think that they are made by termites but I later on found out that there are just too much of these coming in various sizes and their insides are just plain sand or mud. My father gave me a logical explanation that the rains washed away (or eroded as what Sarah has said) the area around it but the ground under the pebbles are shielded by the stones so erosion are weaker under them resulting in these unusual formations.

Still fascinating though, and I love the picture.

Yes Sarah I wondered that also but in my imagination I had little creatures creating and living in them!!

I think I've seen something like this before. Could it be erosion?
