California Ground Squirrel

Otospermophilus beecheyi

Description:

Common ground squirrels. Their backs area mottled brown, grey and light colors, giving it a look like spots. These squirrels spend most of their time on the ground or in or near their burrows. Occasionally you can find them perched on posts or top of shrubs to scan the area for predators.

Habitat:

Can be found in many places from hillsides, open fields and near shorelines in rocky areas.

Notes:

This one was spotted gathering dry plant material to insulate it's burrow.
