Sandhill Crane

Grus canadensis

Description:

I have never been close enough to notice that the red forehead of the sandhill crane is skin color rather than feathers. I thought maybe the bird was just stressed because it was living in a rehab center but the others in there were the same...maybe all were stressed. Anyone know? This bird had a permanent wing injury due to being hit by a golf cart. Unfortunately golf courses are a favorite place for sandhill cranes to hang out in FL.

Almost like a vulture, but only on the forehead, I didn't realize that either!

Pretty interesting, huh? Their red foreheads ARE bald--a beautiful illusion.
