Steller sea lion

Eumetopias jubatus

Description:

I was surprised to see these sea lions so high up on a rock. It must take them quite a bit of effort to get up there. These all seemed smaller, maybe just females and immature males... Not really sure. These are quite common around Kodiak Island.

Habitat:

Large rock in the water close to Afognak Island. I didn't see any Orca in this bay during the few days we were here, so I think this is a little bit safer for them compared to some spots I have seen sea lions along Kodiak's coast which aren't so far up in a bay.
