Dark Grass Brown

Orsotriaena medus medus

Description:

Nymphalidae; Satyrinae; Orsotriaena medus medus Fabricius 1775. These two butterflies were behaving exactly as would be expected according to information given in Wikipedia and Philippine Lepidoptera concerning the preferred environment of the Satyrinae. They were making short flights, only when I disturbed them by getting too close when taking pictures. The part of our backyard, where they were spotted, has a good number of Mahogany trees which provide shade and at this time of year (rainy season) the grass and leaf litter is always wet, providing the perfect environment for "Browns".

Habitat:

Spotted in grasses and foliage in our backyard.
