Belted Kingfisher - male

Ceryle alcyon

Slate blue/grey like the colour of the lake that day. Long beak for grabbing fish in the water, one blue band identifies it at the male of the species, female has an additional band which is rust coloured. Short stocky square jizz. White collar.

Lakes, streams, ocean shores, like best when there is a tree or a piling or something to perch on while watching for movement or shadow in the water. Often gives its "rattle" call while flying over the water or from perch to perch.
