Smaller member of the owl family, nests in burrows dug by mammals such as prairie dogs. In this case, an artificial burrow was dug with PVC pipe connecting to an underground chamber.
The area where these photos were taken is in an area bounded by residential development in Las Vegas. These birds live in the Mojave and Sonoran deserts. This species is in decline, and efforts are being made to save it.

This is a lovely and interesting spotting. To make it complete, and useful to researchers using this site for data, please edit this and add a reference about this species in the reference field of your spotting. Please do this for each photo you post. Thanks for helping to make Project Noah a complete reference tool for scientists.
nice series!
