Burrowing Owl

Description:

Smaller member of the owl family, nests in burrows dug by mammals such as prairie dogs. In this case, an artificial burrow was dug with PVC pipe connecting to an underground chamber.

Habitat:

The area where these photos were taken is in an area bounded by residential development in Las Vegas. These birds live in the Mojave and Sonoran deserts. This species is in decline, and efforts are being made to save it.
