Red-banded Leafhopper

Graphocephala coccinea

Description:

Red-banded leafhoppers, also known as sharpshooters, feed on sap of the xylem tissue of vascular plants and have been identified as a carrier of a bacteria infection known as Pierce's Disease. This bacteria blocks the flow of water in the xylem of trees & woody plants causing leaf scorch & chlorosis, eventually killing the tree or plant over time, particularly in plants where the leafhopper eggs overwinter. Several parasitic wasps & other predators of soft bodied insects can help to control populations, but this biological control is not always effective.

Habitat:

Canada - Central America. Meadows, woodlands.
