Jerusalem cricket or Potato Bug

Stenopelmatus

Description:

First time I saw one it looked like a giant ant or cricket 6 legs, light to dark brown with stripes on abdomen. Flightless The names are misleading as they don't eat potatoes and are not true crickets. They eat dead or organic matter. Non venomous but can bite and produce a foul smell

Habitat:

nocturnal it usually burrows under rocks and fallen trees. Native to United States and some parts of Mexico.

Notes:

found burrowed under a rock along with two slender salamanders.
