Mourning Cloak Butterfly

Nymphalis antiopa

Description:

Mourning Cloak Butterfly on a bench at the local Botanical Gardens.

Habitat:

Local Botanical Gardens.

Notes:

The common name "mourning cloak" refers to the wings resembling a traditional dark-colored cloak worn when one was in mourning. It is also one of a number of butterfly species that overwinter as adults. They spend the winter frozen in "cryo-preservation," hibernating in tree crevices.
