Thanks all! I neglected to mention in the notes that this turtle's front right leg was bent backwards and it appeared unable to move (this is why I was able to line up such a clear shot). It was still alive, but definitely injured. My only guesses as to how it would have broken its leg are some sort of human interference, perhaps hit by a bike (it was on a gravel trail) or picked up and dropped, unfortunately.
