Rough-legged Hawk

Buteo lagopus

Description:

Large hawk from the Artic. Migrates south in the winter
This one is considered a light morph. Mostly brown with speckled white on back and wings. Breast has brown band. Head, underwings, tail and rump are white. Streaked brown on head, one or more band on end of tail and barred on the legs. Legs have feathers all the way to the toes. Wings are long and extend past the tail. Beak is dark with a yellow cere. Feet are yellow.

Habitat:

Since it loves rodents they are found over mostly grass areas.

Notes:

This one was spotted on a power pole in ranch areas.

Thank you Maria. I was lucky to find it. After about 6 shots it took off but not far. Other birders said it would come back to the same pole. It's only here for a short while. Hopefully for the whole winter before it heads back up north.
