American Alligators

Alligator mississippiensis

Description:

Some of the largest reptiles in the world. Alligators have rounded snouts as opposed to the elongated snouts of crocodiles.

Habitat:

Circle B Bar Reserve, Lakeland, FL.

Notes:

Nowhere in the world like Central and Southern Florida for alligator viewing, and this reserve is one of the best. You get to walk among them with no actual separation at all. As I was hiking, I came up within 20 feet of this 7 or 8 foot mother and at least 7 babies that I could see. That was close enough for me of course, but what a privilege to see this little pile of gators in the wild.
