Everglades Periphyton



Periphyton is a complex mixture of algae, cyanobacteria, heterotrophic microbes, and detritus. - wikipedia


in clumps or coating submerge surfaces.


Not much to look at but incredibly vital to aquatic ecosystems. In the Florida Everglades it forms cigar-shaped clumps when wet (as seen in these pictures) and when dry it can be seen as gray mats. Spotted at Pa-hay-okee Overlook in Everglades National Park. Learn a little more about it here:
