Surinam Cockroach ( Nymph )

Description:

Cockroach: I walked into the kitchen, and I saw an all black cockroach, resting on the kitchen floor. This cockroach, was five eights of an inch long. It had two, filiform antennae. It had six, jointed legs. It had a head, thorax, and an abdomen. It had two, compound eyes. Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Insecta Order: Blattodea Family: Blaberidae Genus: Pycnoscelus Species: P. surinamensis The Surinam cockroach or greenhouse cockroach, is a species of burrowing cockroach. Adults are around 18 to 25 mm ( 0.71 to 0.98 in ) in length. Older nymphs, develope shiny black anterior abdominal segments, and roughened, dull posterior segments. There are more than 3,500 species of cockroaches. Cockroaches are characterized by an oval, flat-bodied shape, leathery wings, long antennae, long legs, and a flat extension ( or thoracic shield ), that extends dorsally, to conceal the head. As insects, they are characterized by three pairs of jointed legs, an abdomen that is divided into 11 segments, and a body separated into three parts, and one pair of sensory antennae, on the head. Cockroaches, are classified as "true insects". True insects, are distinguished from all other arthropods, by having ectognathous, or exposed mouth parts. Cockroaches, are normally nocturnal, and will run away, when exposed to lights. Surinam cockroaches, are burrowing insects, that are capable of destroying various plants. This cockroach was alive, and able to move.

Habitat:

The Surinam cockroach, is an outdoor cockroach. They can be found on lawns, landscapes, and wooded areas. This species of cockroach, is a burrowing cockroach, commonly burrowing in loose soil, humus, mould, compost piles and lawn thatch, or hiding beneath rocks, rotten branches, trash, and other debris. They can be found in gardens, dirt and grass, greenhouses, potted plants, flowers, tree leaves, and weeds. Surinam roaches, are found primarily in south Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and in humid, tropical and sub-tropical climates.
