Callipepla californica

Description:

On a hike in Fountian Creek I spotted this California quail. He had quite a few babies with him. The chicks were hiding in the brush.

Thanks Ava! I have a few friends that were evacuated but we are all safe.

Welcome to Project Noah, EvaSeifert. You've just had a hellish week there in the Springs. I hope you and everyone you know is safe.

Also, thanks for the sex ID. I think mom was around there as the babies were darting in and out.

Thanks! I was talking with the people at the nature center near where I took the picture and they think someone released the quail. We looked up the range and it is not in in Colorado Springs. Maybe the California quail are expanding their teritory.

You caught a really nice photo of a male quail. The females have a much smaller topknot and lack the black on the throat. They are normally very shy and hard to get a picture of, so good work!
