English Plantain

Plantago lanceolata

Description:

I always think that this is Plantago lanceolata but not 100% The leaves of plantains can be used in tea to make 'an effective cough medicine' (wikipedia). The seed can be collected and either eaten on the spot or prepared somehow (see ray mears wild food guide) and also the young leaves are good in salads apparently... (ray mears)

Notes:

Found between the wall and the path just outside a wooded area. In America this is considered a weed and an invading species

Your suggestion is correct. They are a bit variable as most weeds are. They are a weed everywhere.
