Description:

Morphological Classification: SEDGE; Local Name: "PAYONG-PAYONG"; Life Cycle: ANNUAL; Means of Reproduction: SEEDS; Reported impacts on rice: Cyperus difformis is a C3 weed. One plant can produce 50,000 seeds with 60% germination. It can complete its life cycle within 30 days and spreads rapidly to become a dominant weed in a ricefield where moisture level is fluctuating. When left uncontrolled, it can reduce yield of rice by as much as 43%.

Habitat:

Grows in irrigated and lowland ricefields.
