American black vulture

Coragyps atratus

Description:

Would you believe that black vultures are actually related to storks. They have bare heads, and toes adapted for walking and standing rather than the grabbing toes of birds of prey. There are two vultures in Florida--the turkey vulture and the black vulture. The black vulture is the smaller of the two and has the bare black head while the turkey vulture has a bare red head. They are scavengers - the clean-up crew at road kills.

Habitat:

There were two of these black vultures spotted in the Ocala National Forest in Ocala, Florida.
