Dead leaf Mimicking Spider/Drag tail spider

Arachnura melanura

Description:

A small spider of size around 1-1.5 cms found in my backyard.. At first sight it dint look like a spider at all..! It camouflages itself by mimicking dead leaves and twigs to get protection from its predators.

Habitat:

small shrubs and plants..It ranges from India to Japan to Sulawesi

Yes willie.. These spiders just weave a a web and sit in center of that web as a fallen off dead leaf..! This is a juvenile probably. Look at the reference i have provided for the fully grown spider..:-)

Yes chun.. I saw that too.. But there is a color variation among these two.. Also, the shape and pattern on the abdomen is also different. That makes a big difference i think..!

Welcome.
It does look a lot like Cyclosa too.
As for DigantaGogoi's similar spotting, I have also sent an ID suggestion.
His spotting is a Cyclosa spider.

Yes Chun.. Your ID is perfect i think.. Probably this may be a juvenile and when it grows bigger, its tail grows longer and its front legs become dark brown in color..:-) Thank you very much for the ID..:):)

Looks more like Arachnura higginsi except that it is not found in India.
So Arachnura melanura will be the best ID then.
Maybe it's tail grows longer as it matures.
