Northern Paper Wasp

Polistes fuscatus

Description:

Are large, slender-bodied wasps with yellow faces, dark backs, and red with yellow stripes on abdomen, but coloration can vary greatly.

Habitat:

Nests are built hanging from horizontal surfaces, such as the eaves of houses.

Notes:

Like the long-legged fly I posted earlier this shot also came from simply watching the backyard birdbath carefully. Many insects also need water.
