A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Pavo cristatus
Male Peafowl (Peacock), lost in its own beautiful plumage - during breeding season the males have the magnificent tail plumage which they display, this one is a feral bird (not native to Australia) that wandered through the woodland and has now taken up residence. The call is ear piercingly loud, especially at close range with a series of honks and squawks and a low gutteral sound when close by. There are several colour variations - this one as in the Indian variety of blue/purple head and body with matching colour combination feathers elswhere. Eats almost anything small such as invertebrates/insects, frogs, lizards etc. A large pheasant shaped bird, is able to fly even with such a large tail.
In native country they inhabit the rainforests, in Australia usually farms and host properties but also feral wandering through bushland at will. They travel many kilometres especially during breeding season.
Although beautiful they are not a great bird to have around when you are hoping to attract many other species of wildlife to your area as they will eat most of the small creatures!

Thanks dotun55.
Absolutely beautiful series. I appreciate the first three photos the most. Would be perfect for wall decoration. Abstract and artsy!
Thanks littlelokelani. I find the feathers of birds incredibly interesting - the colour, structure, how they react to light in producing the irridescence - and the way feathers develop throughout a bird's life and the seasonal changes.
