Pholisora catullus
Green caterpillar with black head and narrow black "collar," building leaf shelter from pigweed (Amaranthus sp.). The caterpillars fold over a section of leaf and tie it together with silk, then hide in the shelter during the day, coming out at night to feed. Eventually it will pupate inside the shelter and then emerge as a small white-speckled black butterfly.
Urban sidewalk weed patch; collected and raised in captivity.
