Broad-bodied Chaser

Libellula depressa

Description:

Despite the second part of it's Latin name, there is nothing depressing about seeing this wonderful insect on the wing! The flash of blue as males chase after each other is very reminiscent of Kingfishers

Habitat:

A wide range of mostly stagnant water bodies - especially if shallow and sunny

Notes:

This is a very common Dragonfly in Europe. It terms of photographing them, it's a good idea to sit back and watch for a while (you may also find that you are being watched too). After a time it's possible to observe favorite resting spots, which will almost certainly be exposed sunny perches. Once discovered, it's possible to stand still, close to the spot in order to take photographs.
