Spider wasp

Aporinellus sp.

Description:

About 7-8 millimeters in body length, colored as shown with black and blue-gray. Male is in the last image, more slender, with bold black and gray banding on the abdomen.

Habitat:

These wasps were running rapidly over a yucca pod, gleaning aphid honeydew from its surface. Overall habitat is degraded shortgrass prairie with sunflower, prickly-pear cacti, and scattered elm trees.

Notes:

These wasps are virtually impossible to identify to species from images of wild specimens.
