Acosmeryx anceus

Description:

A hawkmoth barely alive outside my house. One of two Acosmeryx species found in Papua.

Habitat:

Spotted on garden fence post in a large semi-urban yard & garden next to a disturbed patch of remnant lowland forest. This is in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

Late afternoon using flash.

Thanks very much Nuwan for pointing me in the right direction! There are two Acosmeryx species in Papua, both in my area too. Apparently, the Australian A. miskini was recently discovered to be different from the one in Papua, now named Acosmeryx miskinoides Vaglia & Haxaire, 2007. However the other one, Acosmeryx anceus, looks like mine. :-)

There are few similar looking species in the genus, but only one species in Papua according to Sphingidae of the Eastern Palaearctic website.
