Mediterranean gecko

Hemidactylus turcicus

Description:

4-5 in. long with sticky toe pads, vertical pupils and no eyelids. The Mediterranean gecko is generally yellow or tan with black spots, and often has stripes on the tail. It has bumpy, warty skin, which distinguishes it from the similar Indopacific gecko.

Habitat:

Area around the back of my house and deck. My yard is a certified backyard habitat, with water, shelter and plants chosen to attract wildlife.

Notes:

This gecko was first reported in Key West, Florida in 1915, probably arriving as a stowaway in a ship. It is nocturnal, a voracious predator of moths and small roaches, and unlike most reptiles, seems to be highly resistant to pesticides.
