Description:

A shiny blue-black unidentified weevil, perhaps 3cm TL.

Habitat:

Spotted on vegetation along a survey transect in secondary coastal lowland mixed freshwater swamp forest/sago swamp forest.

Notes:

This specimen made a great effort to elude the photographer.

Was able to track it further down to possibly
= Aporhina nitens (Snellen van Vollenhoven. 1866)

Key was old (1896), and several spp. described afterwards.

I have just invented the "common name" - the group had none yet!

Your weevil belongs in a small, ancient relict group of weevils (Eurhynchidae), characterized by straight antennae (like Brentidae) with a long, furry club (unlike Brentidae, in wich they are merged by some taxonomists).
They are found in Australia, and New Guinea exclusively.
