Nostoc commune

Nostoc commune

Description:

A strange patch of very dark green jelly-like shapes which reminded me of the fungus Tremella. The shapes were approximately the same sizes.

Habitat:

Embedded in lawn in front of a suburban hospital. The soil was very poor in nutrients and the area (behind the glass of a busstop) was covered in many different mosses, lichens and fungi.

Notes:

A pleasant surprise to find this is not a fungus but a cyanobacteria. Read about them here... http://www.anbg.gov.au/bryophyte/ecology... and get a better view of another one here... http://www.aphotoflora.com/cyanobacteria...

Cool. This pops up along the side of our driveway every time it rains. I never knew what it was.
