A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Marmota monax
Also known as a groundhog or marmot. These photos are a few years old, but I've been seeing them a lot this week! They've been on the property for as long as I can remember, raising new families each year.
I don't recommend ever getting this close! I was taking a risk by laying right in front of their burrow when these photos were taken, and this one was standing it's ground and growling warnings at me. It's mate was watching from the top of the hill. (Third photo.) They very likely had offspring that they were protecting.

We do have a garden, but it's fenced off, and they never really come that close to the house. Probably because of the dogs. We've always been able to coexist pretty well with the local wildlife.
You must not raise vegetables, because they can be pests!
marmot are not groundhogs
Glad that no one was hurt in the encounter! You got some cool shots though.
