As kids, (and I admit I still do it now and then ;)) we used to pluck one of the un-opened flowers and grabbing it by the base you smash it against your forehead to produce a loud popping noise, if you hit it just right. I'm assuming that is why it's called Firecracker Plant. Though the plant itself also looks like a spray of red and green fireworks.
