Solitary wasp

Description:

Roughly 8-10 millimeters in body length, colored as shown.

Habitat:

Female wasp exiting her nest burrow at the edge of a path with deep, sandy soil adjacent to a riparian corridor with an arroyo (dry riverbed). Surrounding habitat is heavily degraded shortgrass prairie with sunflower, yucca, prickly-pear cacti, and scattered elm trees.

Notes:

These solitary wasps provision their nests with leafhoppers.
