Soldier beetles

Chauliognathus sp.

Description:

The beetles were among many gathered on a bracken fern leaf near a fast flowing stream. Not a species I've seen before. Much smaller than the common plague beetles. Males look to be about half the length of the females. Females were about 12mm long. Approximately 20 pairs on one bracken fern leaf and none found anywhere else nearby.

Habitat:

In a local nature reserve. Cardinia.
