Southern Carmine Bee-eater

Merops nubicoides

Description:

A strikingly colored bird that winters in equatorial africa and breeds/summers in Southern Africa. These were just post breeding, as there were a few juveniles hanging about(last three photos). They hang around larger species of animals, and roadsides, waiting for insects to be "scared up" so they can catch them on the wing. Very social, roosting in large groups

Habitat:

Chobe park in the dry marsh area. They are fond of perching on rocks, termite mounds and if nothing else is available low branches while looking for food

Notes:

My best pictures of these birds came from our stay in Zimbabwe. To be posted later :)
