Golden-mantled ground squirrel

Spermophilus lateralis

Description:

Has one white stripe bordered by black stripes on each side. Common ground squirrel in CO.

Habitat:

Spruce-fir forest

Notes:

Log and slash piles in managed forests like the one seen in the picture are often used by small mammals. The forest at this location contains spruce beetles and will experience a die off of the majority of mature spruce trees. With all the beetles in the trees, the three-toed woodpeckers are doing very well and could be heard drumming all day.
