Pied-billed Grebe

Description:

A small diving bird with a chicken-like bill, the Pied-billed Grebe is common on lakes and ponds across North America. It is rarely seen flying and prefers to sink out of sight when danger threatens. It migrates at night.

Habitat:

First there was one then another and finally a third came out of the edge vegetation to swim quickly across a pond at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge.
