Red billed oxpecker

Buphagus erythrorhynchus

Description:

In the starling and myna family, the red billed oxpecker is one of two species that collect insects off the bodies of herd animals. Far from being altruistic, however, the oxpecker's favorite food is blood, and will keep insect bites open to feed on the blood oozing from open sores. Many animals are observed trying to shake these birds, presumably because their attentions are annoying and/or painful

Habitat:

on the back of a cape buffalo in Chobe
