Common Bird's Nest Fungus

Crucibulum laeve

Description:

Tiny, cup shaped fungus. They look a bit like drums initially, then the cap comes off and the small lentil-shaped eggs inside become visible. They are ejected out of the cup when water hits them. Brown and slightly hairy on the outside of the cups, smooth and pale with some darker areas on the inside. The eggs are white.

Habitat:

Suburban yard. Growing in mulch.
