Black-spotted longhorn beetle

Description:

Body length 13 - 23mm. A rather attractive species with a black body finely mottled with light brown and with two distinct buff-edged black eye-like spots on its elytra (wing cases). The antennae are noticeably shorter in relation to the body length than most longhorns. Its larvae are polyphagous in the decaying boles or stumps of a wide range of broad-leaved trees, though most often in oak. An early species, the adults can be seen on warm days from April to July, peaking in May.

Habitat:

Deciduous or mixed woods, often on hawthorn blossom.
