I did post the latin name, and this is Roosevelt elk territory. The are pretty good size, but this was taken at about 1/2 mile away and they are in deep slough grass. In some ways, I was lucky to see them driving down the hwy at 55 with a full barrier between me and the road below

Hi there,
If those are not full adults then it is most likely the The Roosevelt Elk Cervus canadensis roosevelti
Otherwise it would be the Rocky Mountain Elk Cervus canadensis nelsoni
because they are a lighter color and smaller then the Roosevelt Elk
Those don't look very big.
