Ruddy shelduck

Tadorna ferruginea

Description:

Fairly large duck (some 60 cm in length) with long neck and long dark legs. Body predominantly orange-brown, while the head and neck are much paler, cinnamon buff in color, with white face. The beak is dark brown to blackish. The bird pictured here must be a juvenile, as adults develop a black neck ring in summer.

Habitat:

Here seen on shores of lake Leman (or lake Geneva), urban setting. This is far away from its natural distribution area; records have it that it has been introduced in Switzerland.

Notes:

Also known as Brahminy duck in India.
