Canis latrans
High desert mountains, seasonal lake, 7000 ft elevation
Pack of 4 coyotes, they oftened followed us on our walks with dogs. They never harassed us, probably because our dogs obey when off-leash; but they would often run from, corner, and circle other peoples' dogs that chased them. The smallest one would "bait" us, always staying within close range. the second largest would follow at a distance, but within the brush, somewhat out of sight. The second smallest would be far out on the dry lake or farther down the shore, but within sight. The biggest would remain hidden until lesser obedient dogs would give chase, then he would sprint after the dog giving chase, essentially trapping it between all four coyotes.

They never attacked our dogs, just followed us, we didn't let our dogs chase them; however, other dogs in neighborhood would chase the little coyote and then the other three in the pack would swoop in from their hiding places and surround the dog. If those dogs were being walked, the owner would eventually catch up to the pack and scare them off. The dogs that came running out from a home would get attacked and sometimes killed and eaten if they were smallish dogs.
You are lucky they did not bite your dogs.
My neighbour's dog Casy ,was bit quite badly on the rump. It took a lot of Tender loving care on Norman and Maria's part to get Casy on track.
It must have been pup season,
