Barred Owl (male)

Strix varia

Description:

Male Barred Owl resident returned to the same branch outside the kitchen window. He was just very sleepy. Many birds flitted around him and he did not care. His eyes followed me from window to window. Barred Owls are 16-23 inches. Large round head, no ear tufts; dark eyes; mottled brown with barred throat and streaked underparts. Streaked lenghtwize on the belly (shown in image one) where he just scratched. Last image is of him scratching his chest.

Habitat:

Wet woodlands, wooded swamps, floodplain. This roosting spot is near the small brook (iced over).

Notes:

Second time this same owl roosted on this branch at the same time of the day. Males are smaller than females.
