These graceful, tireless fliers are about 25 cm (9.75 in) in length. The back is dark with a wash of white on the leading edge of the wing. The bill is fairly slender with a slight decurve. The head and neck is black
Freshwater marshes across the northern hemisphere. In winter they migrate south to warmer marshes.
